Senate Committee Approves Sex Trafficking Act

On November 8, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation passed, by voice vote, S. 1693, the Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act (SESTA) of 2017, as amended, sponsored by Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH). The committee held a hearing on the bill on September 29 (see The Source, 9/22/17). The House Judiciary Committee also held a hearing on preventing online sex trafficking (see The Source, 10/6/17).

Among other provisions, the measure would amend the Communications Decency Act (P.L. 104-104) to specify that any entity knowingly assisting, supporting, or facilitating sex trafficking could be held liable for participating in such a venture.
