The Women’s Congressional Policy Institute Mourns the Passing of
Congresswoman Louise Slaughter

The Women’s Congressional Policy Institute (WCPI) mourns the loss of Congresswoman Louise Slaughter (D-NY), who passed away on Friday, March 16. The Democratic Co-Chair of the Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues during the 108th Congress, Congresswoman Louise Slaughter was serving her 16th term representing the 25th District of New York. She served as Ranking Member of the House Committee on Rules; she was the first woman to chair the Rules Committee in 2007.

The only microbiologist serving in Congress, Congresswoman Slaughter was a longtime champion for women’s health, and a leader in the establishment of the Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH), the inclusion of women and minorities in clinical trials, and breast cancer research. Ten years after the creation of the ORWH, the National Institutes of Health awarded her the “Visionary for Women’s Health Research” award.
