On February 13, the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee approved, by voice vote, the Prematurity Research Expansion and Education for Mothers who deliver Infants Early (PREEMIE) Act (S. 252). The Senate passed a similar version of the bill in November 2012 (see The Source, 11/16/12), but the legislation expired at the end of the 112th Congress.
The bill, sponsored by Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN), would aim to reduce preterm delivery, the risk of pregnancy-related complications and deaths, and infant mortality caused by prematurity. The text of S. 252 is available here.
