On September 21, the House passed, by voice vote, H.R. 2943, a bill, sponsored by Rep. Geoff Davis (R-KY), to extend temporarily the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program through December 31, 2011. The Senate approved the measure, by voice vote, on September 23. The president is expected to sign the bill into law. The current authorization (P.L. 111-291) will expire on September 30.
The TANF program provides funding to states, which provide cash assistance and services to low-income families.
