House Begins Consideration of NASA Reauthorization, Provisions for Women in Science

On June 12, the House began consideration of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Authorization Act of 2008 (H.R. 6063).

The bill would authorize $20.21 billion in FY2009 for a number of programs, including science, aeronautics, exploration, education, space operations, and human space flight.

During debate on the measure, the House approved, by voice vote, an amendment by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) to require the NASA technology outreach program to direct its efforts toward women- and minority-owned small businesses, and give priority to small businesses that are socially and economically disadvantaged, veteran-owned small businesses, and those located in HUBZones.

The House is expected to complete work on the legislation next week.
