House Completes Action on FY2010 Defense Spending Measure; Provisions on Breast, Ovarian Cancer Research

On July 30, the House approved, 400-30, the FY2010 Department of Defense spending bill (H.R. 3326). The House Appropriations Committee approved the measure on July 22 (see The Source, 7/24/09).

The bill would provide $636.584 billion in FY2010, $71.407 billion above FY2009 and $3.848 billion below the administration’s request.

The committee report details a number of programs of interest to women and their families:

Breast and gynecologic cancer research programs at Walter Reed Army Medical Center would receive $40 million in FY2010 (p. 321); according to a committee press release, included in that amount is level-funding of $150 million for the breast cancer research program (P.L. 102-396) and $25 million for ovarian cancer research, $5 million above FY2009.

Family Assistance and Reintegration programs would receive $20 million (p. 122). Family advocacy programs would receive $472.4 million (p. 13).

The Women in the Military Service for America Memorial would receive $2 million (p. 401). The Women’s Cancer Genomics Center would receive $3 million (p. 435), $287,000 more than FY2009.
