On May 25, the House International Relations Committee approved, by voice vote, a resolution (H. Res. 784) applauding the establishment of Iraq’s first radio station for women, Radio Al Mahaba.
Sponsored by Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY), the resolution notes that Radio Al Mahaba, the first and only radio station for women in Iraq, had its first broadcast on April 1, 2005. Radio Al Mahaba is commended for its dedication to women’s rights and women’s issues and for its role as a valuable educational tool that gives women the opportunity to freely express their views. H. Res. 784 also pays tribute to the radio staff, who, despite the risks involved, continue to work at the station to promote empowerment and freedom for Iraqi women.
