House Passes Foreign Relations Authorization Act

On July 17, the House passed, 333 to 61, the FY2013 Foreign Relations Authorization Act (H.R. 6018). The House Foreign Affairs Committee approved the measure on June 27 (see The Source, 6/29/12).

The bill maintains current authorization levels for foreign aid programs, including identical authorization levels of $1.6 billion for contributions to international organizations, $1.828 billion for international peacekeeping activities, and $375 million for the Peace Corps. The legislation also would expand a State Department rewards program focused on international crime. The new program, in addition to offering rewards for information on terrorism and narcotics trafficking, would target war criminals and persons involved in genocide or crimes against humanity.
