Senate Approves Bill Extending Breast Cancer Research Stamp

On November 14, the Senate approved, by unanimous consent, a bill (S. 597) that would extend a law (P.L. 109-100) requiring the U.S. Postal Service to issue the breast cancer postage stamp until FY2011. The current authorization expires on December 31, 2007. The Senate also adopted, by unanimous consent, a substitute amendment by the bill’s sponsor, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), to extend the stamp for four years, rather than two years as was proposed in the original bill. Proceeds from the sale of the stamps are contributed to breast cancer research. The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee approved the bill on August 1 (see The Source, 8/3/07). The House approved an identical version of the bill (H.R. 1236) on October 30 (see The Source, 11/2/07).
