On December 10, the Senate approved, by unanimous consent, H.R. 2941, the Gynecological Cancer Education and Awareness Act, also known as Johanna’s Law. The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee approved the measure on December 1 (see The Source, 12/3/10); the House passed the bill on September 29 (see The Source, 9/30/10). The amended bill must return to the House for its consideration; at press time, there is no timetable for such action.
During its consideration of the measure, the Senate adopted a substitute amendment by Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA) to remove the education and outreach demonstration projects from the bill. The requirement that the secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services must consult with nonprofit gynecological cancer organizations to determine best practices in providing information to various populations across the country would remain in the legislation.
