Senate Votes to Rename Tax Provision After Retiring Senator Hutchison

On December 27, the Senate approved, by voice vote, a bill (S. 3667) to rename Section 219(c) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 as the Kay Bailey Hutchison Spousal IRA.

Sponsored by Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), the measure would name Section 219(c) of the Internal Revenue Code after its original sponsor, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX). Section 219(c) contains special rules for certain married individuals regarding tax deductions for retirement contributions. The provision expands the availability of Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) for spouses who stay at home and sets the limit for contributions into an IRA at the same level for all women, regardless of marital status.

Sen. Hutchison is the most senior Republican woman senator, having been elected to the Senate in a special election in 1993. She has served three full terms in the Senate and retired at the end of the 112th Congress.
