Weekly Highlights: May 9-13, 2016

Floor Action:

Health- On May 11, the House approved several bills to address the prevention of, and treatment for, opioid addiction, including H.R. 3691, the Improving Treatment for Pregnant and Postpartum Women Act; H.R. 4843, the Improving Safe Care for the Prevention of Infant Abuse and Neglect Act; H.R. 4978, the Nurturing and Supporting Healthy Babies Act; H.R. 4982, the Examining Opioid Treatment Infrastructure Act; H.R. 5046, the Comprehensive Opioid Abuse Reduction Act and its version of S. 524, the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act.

Military- On May 11, the House approved, by voice vote, the Senate amendments to H.R. 4336, the Women Airforce Service Pilots Inurnment Restoration Act.

International- On May 9, the Senate approved, by unanimous consent, S. Res. 436, a resolution supporting World Malaria Day.

Mark-Ups:

Military- On May 12, the Senate Armed Services Committee approved, 23-3, S. 2814, the FY2017 National Defense Authorization Act. The Personnel Subcommittee approved its portion of the bill on May 10.

Crime- On May 12, the Senate Judiciary Committee approved, by voice vote, S. 2577, the Justice for All Reauthorization Act, as amended.

Appropriations- On May 11, the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense approved the FY2017 Defense spending bill (as-yet-unnumbered).

Veterans- On May 11, the House Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs approved several bills, including H.R. 4892, a bill to require the Department of Veterans Affairs to pay certain veterans special compensation for the loss, or loss of use, of creative organs.

Family Support- On May 11, the House Ways and Means Committee approved several bills to address employment among recipients of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, including H.R. 2966, the Reducing Poverty through Employment Act, and H.R. 2990, the Accelerating Individuals into the Workforce Act.
