Weekly Highlights: April 20-24, 2015

Floor Action:

Human Trafficking- After several weeks of consideration, the Senate approved, on April 22, the Justice for Victims of Trafficking Act (S. 178), by a vote of 99-0.

Mark-Ups:

Military- On April 23, the House Armed Services Military Personnel Subcommittee approved, by voice vote, its portion of the FY2016 National Defense Authorization Act (H.R. 1735).

On April 22, the House Appropriations Committee approved, by voice vote, the FY2016 Military Construction, Veterans’ Affairs, and Related Agencies spending bill (H.R. 2029).

Human Trafficking- On April 23, the House Foreign Affairs Committee approved, by voice vote, the Survivors of Human Trafficking Empowerment Act (H.R. 500).

International- On April 23, the House Foreign Affairs Committee approved, by voice vote, the Global Food Security Act (H.R. 1567).

Reproductive Health- On April 21, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee passed, 20-16, H.J. Res. 43, a resolution disapproving the action of the DC Council in approving the Reproductive Health Non-discrimination Amendment Act.

Hearings:

Veterans- On April 21, the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee held a hearing, “Fulfilling the Promise to Women Veterans.”

On April 23, the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee held a hearing on several bills, including a bill to provide counseling services for women veterans recently separated from the armed forces (H.R. 1575) and a bill to improve reproductive treatments for certain disabled veterans (as-yet-unnumbered).

Human Trafficking- On April 22, the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights, and International Organizations held a hearing, “Accountability and Transformation: Tier Ranking in the Fights Against Human Trafficking.”
