Appropriations Committee Action

Defense: On May 18, the Senate Appropriations Committee approved, by voice vote, the FY2001 defense spending bill (as-yet-unnumbered). The Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense approved the bill by voice vote the day before. The bill would provide $175 million for peer-reviewed breast cancer research at the Department of Defense. The program received the same amount last year, and the House subcommittee-approved bill included the same amount.

Transportation: At press time, the House was considering the FY2001 transportation spending bill (H.R. 4475). On May 16, the House Appropriations Committee approved the bill by voice vote. The measure would provide $1.9 million for the Minority Business Resource Center, the same amount as last year. Minority business outreach would receive $3 million, an $118,000 increase over FY2000.
