Senate Approves Anti-Trafficking Treaty

On October 7, the Senate approved the ratification of the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children, which supplements the United Nations Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved the protocol on July 26 (see The Source, 7/29/05).

The United Nations General Assembly adopted the protocol on November 15, 2000, and it entered into force on December 25, 2003, after having been ratified by forty state parties. The United States signed the protocol on December 13, 2000.
