Senate Supports National Sibling Connection Day

On February 28, the Senate approved, by unanimous consent, a resolution (S. Res. 381) designating March 1, 2006, as “National Sibling Connection Day.” Sen. Ken Salazar (D-CO) sponsored the resolution.

According to the resolution, “Sibling relationships are among the longest lasting and most significant relationships in life.” The resolution notes that over 60 percent of children in foster care have siblings, and they are often separated when first placed in the foster care system, adopted, or confronted with different kinship placements. Finally, the resolution states, “Children in foster care have a greater risk of emotional disturbance, difficulties in school, and problems with relationships than their peers, and the separation of siblings as children causes additional grief and loss.”
