Appropriations Committee Action

Defense: On May 25, the House Appropriations Committee approved, by voice vote, the FY2001 defense spending bill (as-yet-unnumbered). The measure would level-fund peer-reviewed breast cancer research at the Department of Defense at $175 million, the same amount provided in the Senate bill (S. 2593). Ovarian cancer research would receive $10 million, a decrease of $2 million from FY2000. At press time, the funding figure for osteoporosis research was not available. Under the Senate bill (S. 2593), breast cancer research would receive $175 million, ovarian cancer research would receive $12 million, and osteoporosis research would receive $7.5 million.

Interior: On May 25, the House Appropriations Committee approved, 31-22, the FY2001 interior spending bill (as-yet-unnumbered). The measure does not provide funding for restoration of the Sewall-Belmont House, home of the National Woman’s Party. Last year, $500,000 was appropriated for the house.

VA-HUD: On May 23, the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Veterans Affairs, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies approved, by voice vote, the FY2001 VA-HUD spending bill (as-yet-unnumbered). The Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS (HOPWA) program would be level-funded at $232 million. The Stewart McKinney Homeless Assistance grants program also would be level-funded at $1 billion.
