Child Care Liability Measure Passes House

On June 2, the House approved, by voice vote, the Anthony DeJuan Boatwright Act (H.R. 1662), sponsored by Rep. John Barrow (D-GA).

Named after a child who suffered severe injuries while attending an uninsured child care center, the measure would amend the Child Care Development Block Grant of 1990 (P.L. 101-508) to require child care providers to post “publicly and conspicuously” information regarding whether they carry current liability insurance, effective October 1. The bill also would require the child care providers to provide to parents written notice of liability coverage, obtain the signature of at least one parent of each child enrolled at the center acknowledging that she or he received such notice, and maintain records of such acknowledgments while the child receives services.
