Committee Considers Bill to Address Needs of Drug-Addicted Infants

On March 16, the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee approved, by voice vote, S. 2687, the Plan of Safe Care Improvement Act, sponsored by Sen. Robert Casey (D-PA).

The bill would require the development of plans to address the needs of infants affected by illegal substance abuse or Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. Among other provisions, the measure directs the Department of Health and Human Services to issue guidance to states on the best practices “for the development and implementation of plans of safe care” of such infants.
