Congress Clears Defense Spending Bill

On December 20, the House approved, 408-6, the conference report for the FY2002 defense spending bill (H.R. 3338). The same day, the Senate approved it by a vote of 94-2.

Several women’s health research programs are funded under the bill, including the Department of Defense’s peer-reviewed breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and osteoporosis research programs. At press time, the conference report was unavailable; however, the final agreement includes $150 million to be allocated for research and treatment related to breast cancer. Both the Senate and House bills provided $175 million for breast cancer research.
