Congress Clears FY2001 Defense Spending Conference Report

The Senate on July 27 approved, 91-9, the conference report for the FY2001 defense spending bill (H.R. 4576). The House approved the measure on July 19 (see The Source, 7/21/00). The President is expected to sign the bill.

The final measure provides $175 million for peer-reviewed breast cancer research at the Department of Defense (DoD), the same amount as last year. The bill also level-funds ovarian cancer research at $12 million. The final legislation funds osteoporosis research at $6 million. Last year, Congress appropriated $4 million, but DoD added an additional $2.5 million, bringing total funding to $6.5 million for FY2000.
