Debate on Senate Defense Authorization Halted

The Senate continued consideration of the FY2008 Defense Authorization bill (H.R. 1585) this week until July 18, after failing, 52-47, to obtain the requisite 60 votes necessary to end debate on an amendment to withdraw troops from the war in Iraq.

It is not clear when the Senate will revisit the bill. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said that the measure will be taken up again “as soon as it is clear that we can make real progress.”
