Defense Spending Bill Clears Senate Committee

On May 26, the Senate Appropriations Committee approved, 30-0, the FY2017 Defense spending bill (S. 3000). The Subcommittee on Defense approved the measure on May 24; the House Appropriations Committee approved its version of the bill (H.R. 5293) on May 17 (see The Source, 5/20/16).

According to the committee summary, the bill would provide $515.9 billion in FY2017 for the base Department of Defense budget and $58.6 billion in overseas contingency operations. The total includes $25 million for sexual assault special victims counseling programs and $34 billion for the Defense Health Program.
