Fatherhood Resolution Approved by Senate

On June 18, the Senate approved, by unanimous consent, a resolution (S. Res. 379) protecting, promoting, and celebrating fatherhood. The House approved a similar resolution (H. Res. 66) on June 14 (see The Source, 6/14/04).

Sponsored by Sen. Sam Brownback (R-KS), the resolution contains a number of findings, including:

  • Fathers have a unique bond with their children that is often unrecognized;
  • The complimentary nature of the roles and contributions of fathers and mothers should be recognized and encouraged;
  • Fathers, along with their wives, form an emotional template for the future professional and personal relationships of a child; and
  • The involvement of a father in the life of his child significantly influences the economic and educational attainment of the child.
