FY2008 Appropriations Measures Move Ahead in Senate

This week the Senate approved the FY2008 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and Related Agencies spending bill. The Senate Appropriations Committee approved the FY2008 Department of Defense spending bill.

Transportation, Housing and Urban Development

On September 12, the Senate approved, 88-7, the FY2008 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (HUD), and Related Agencies spending bill (H.R. 3074), after adopting a substitute amendment by Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA), by unanimous consent. The House approved the measure on July 24 (see The Source, 7/27/07).

The measure would allocate $51.112 billion in discretionary funds in FY2008, $2.936 billion more than FY2007 and $3.113 billion more than President Bush’s request.

Committee Action

Department of Defense

On September 12, the Senate Appropriations Committee approved, 29-0, the FY2008 Department of Defense spending bill (H.R. 3222). The House approved the measure on August 5 (see The Source, 8/3/07).

According to a committee press release, the bill would allocate $459.3 billion in FY2008, $39.4 billion above FY2007 (excluding emergency and supplemental appropriations) and $3.8 billion less than the administration’s request.

The measure would provide $23.5 billion for Department of Defense health programs, $2.3 billion above FY2007 and $948.9 million more than President Bush’s request. Included in that amount is $240 million for research on breast cancer, ovarian cancer, and prostate cancer.
