House Approves FY2001 Supplemental Spending Bill; Senate Readies Bill for Floor Action

On June 20, the House approved, 341-87, the FY2001 supplemental appropriations bill (H.R. 2216). The measure would provide $6.5 billion in additional funding for defense needs as well as emergency natural disaster assistance.

The bill also includes $116 million to enable the Treasury Department to mail out tax rebates as provided under the recently enacted Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act (P.L. 107-16). Additionally, the bill would provide $161 million for Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act in order to implement FY2001 Title I allocations to states and local education agencies.

Senate Action

The next day, the Senate Appropriations Committee approved, by unanimous consent, its version of the $6.5 billion FY2001 supplemental spending bill (S. 1077). Under the Senate bill, $100 million would be made available for a global HIV/AIDS trust fund.
