House-Passed NASA Bill Encourages Women in the Sciences

On June 18, the House completed consideration of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Authorization Act (H.R. 6063) and approved the measure, 409-15. Last week, the House approved an amendment to the bill that would affect women-owned small businesses (see The Source, 6/13/08).

During debate on the measure, the House approved, 423-3, an amendment by Rep. Paul Hodes (D-NH) to require NASA to create a scholarship in memory of Christa McAuliffe a teacher who died in the Challenger space shuttle accident. The scholarship would provide $10,000 each year for women pursuing higher education degrees in NASA-related fields, such as science and aeronautics.
