House Passes Legislative Branch Spending Bill

The House on July 31 approved, 380-38, the FY2002 legislative branch appropriations bill (H.R. 2647), sending the bill to conference. The Senate passed its version by a vote of 88-9 on July 19.

The House-passed bill includes language, authored by Rep. Anne Northup (R-KY), directing the Congressional Wellness Center Committee to report to the House Appropriations and the House Administration Committees “any differences in access to the House gym by female Members of the House and by male Members of the House, and to include a proposal to eliminate any such differences in order to provide equal access to the House gym for male and female Members.”

The language was inserted during the House Appropriations Committee mark-up after Rep. Northup argued that women Members do not have equal access to the facility.
