House Passes VA-HUD Spending Bill

After debating several gun-related amendments, the House on June 21 voted, 256-169, to pass the FY2001 Veterans Affairs, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies appropriations bill (H.R. 4635).

Members approved, by voice vote, an amendment that would increase funding for the Housing Opportunities for People with AIDS (HOPWA) program by $18 million, bringing total funding for FY2001 to $250 million. The amendment, offered by Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), would provide an $18 million increase over last year and was offset by cutting funding from the National Science Foundation.

Additionally, the bill would level-fund the Stewart McKinney Homeless Assistance grants program at $1 million.
