Legislative Branch Spending Bill Contains “Family-Friendly” Provisions

On April 20, the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Legislative Branch approved, by voice vote, the FY2017 Legislative Branch spending bill (as-yet-unnumbered).

According to the committee summary, the bill would provide $3.48 billion in FY2017 for operations at the House of Representatives, Library of Congress, Capitol Police, Congressional Budget Office, Architect of the Capitol, and other legislative branch agencies. This amount is $73 million over FY2016 and $152 million below President Obama’s budget request.

The bill includes a provision to add baby-changing tables to bathrooms in the Capitol complex. In addition, the bill would allow pregnant staffers to access convenient parking spaces within the complex.

Additional details will be made available once the committee releases its report.
