Opioid Epidemic Subject of Senate Hearing

On February 23, the Senate Finance Committee held a hearing, “Examining the Opioid Epidemic: Challenges and Opportunities.” The Senate Judiciary Committee held a similar hearing on January 28 (see The Source, 1/29/16).

Dr. Nancy K. Young, director, Children and Family Futures, noted that “Among pregnant women, the highest rates of use continues to be the legal substances, which have known detrimental effects on the neurodevelopment of the fetus.”

The following witnesses also testified:

  • Allan Coukell, senior director, Health Programs, Pew Charitable Trusts; and
  • David Hart, assistant attorney-in-charge, Civil Enforcement, Financial Fraud and Consumer Protection Section, Oregon Department of Justice.
