Senate Appropriations Committee Approves Defense Spending Bill

On September 16, the Senate Appropriations Committee approved, 18-12, the FY2011 Defense (S. 3800) spending bill. The Defense Subcommittee approved the bill by voice vote on September 15.

The measure would provide $669.871 billion in FY2011, which is $11.171 billion over FY2010 and $8.329 billion below President Obama’s request. This amount includes $127.2 billion for military personnel and $157.7 billion in overseas contingency operations.

The bill would provide $31.5 billion for the Defense Health Program. This amount is $2.3 billion over FY2010 and $565 million over the president’s request. The bill would provide $240 million for cancer research, including $150 million for breast cancer and $10 million for ovarian cancer research programs.
