Senate Approves Bills to Address DNA Backlog

On June 16, the Senate approved, by unanimous consent, S. 2577, the Justice for All Reauthorization Act, and S. 2348, the Rapid DNA Act.

Justice for All Reauthorization Act

Sponsored by Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), the bill would help state and local law enforcement agencies address the backlog in processing DNA evidence. The Senate Judiciary Committee approved the bill on May 12 (see The Source, 5/13/16).

Rapid DNA Act

The Rapid DNA Act, sponsored by Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT), would implement the use of instruments and procedures to fully automate DNA analysis to “solve and prevent violent crimes and other crimes, to exonerate the innocent, [and] to prevent DNA analysis backlogs.”

The Judiciary Committee also approved the bill on May 12.
