Senate Approves Land Bill; Provision on Women’s Rights Park

On March 19, the Senate approved, 77-20, H.R. 146. Originally, H.R. 146 was designed to protect the War of 1812 battlefield monument; however, a substitute amendment, approved by unanimous consent, by Sen. Jeff Bingaman (D-NM), removed the original language and replaced the bill text with the text of S. 22. The amended bill next must be reconsidered by the House.

Among the bill’s provisions is language that would allow the construction of the “Votes for Women” trail in the Women’s Rights National Historical Park in Seneca, New York. The bill also would authorize $1 million per year for FY2009-2013 for grants to government and private entities to “provide interpretive and educational program development of national women’s rights history, including historic preservation.”
