Senate Approves Wounded Warrior Act

On July 25, the Senate approved, by voice vote, the Wounded Warrior Act (H.R. 1538), after approving, also by voice vote, a substitute amendment sponsored by Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI). The House passed H.R. 1538 on March 28 (see The Source, 3/30/07).

The Senate legislation began as a freestanding bill (S. 1606) approved by the Senate Armed Services Committee on June 14 (see The Source, 6/15/07). Although the Senate incorporated S. 1606 into the FY2008 Defense Authorization bill (H.R. 1585), it later stripped the provisions from H.R. 1585 after the defense authorization bill was pulled from the Senate floor on July 18 (see The Source, 7/20/07). The new measure would amend S. 1606 to include a 3.5 percent pay raise for service members a provision that was part of the defense authorization bill.
