Senate Committee Examines Cosmetic Products

On September 22, the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee held a hearing, “Exploring Current Practices in Cosmetic Development and Safety.” The hearing focused on understanding how cosmetic products are developed, reviewed, and determined to be safe for public use. In addition, the committee explored whether the Food and Drug Administration has the tools necessary to protect the public health.

The following witnesses testified:

  • Beth Jonas, PhD, chief scientist, Personal Care Products Council;
  • Wilma Bergfeld, MD, senior dermatologist and emeritus director of Dermatopathology; director of Dermatopathology Fellowship, and professor of Dermatology and Pathology Departments of Dermatology and Pathology, Cleveland Clinic; and chair of Cosmetic Ingredient Review;
  • Scott Faber, JD, senior vice president, Government Affairs, Environmental Working Group; and
  • Curran Dandurand, chief executive office, and cofounder, Jack Black LLC.
