Senate Committee Reauthorizes Welfare Grants

On November 1, the Senate Finance Committee gave voice vote approval to legislation (S. 942) that would reauthorize for one year a supplemental block grant program for welfare recipients. The bill would authorize $319 million in FY2002 for the supplemental block grant program, $93 million less than the $412 million authorized for the program in FY2001.

The supplemental grants are part of the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) program included in the 1996 welfare reform law (P.L. 104-193). The TANF supplemental grants help 17 states that have a greater number of welfare recipients.
