Senate Debates FY2006 Emergency Supplemental Appropriations

This week, the Senate continued its consideration of the FY2006 emergency supplemental spending bill (H.R. 4939), which it began before the spring recess (see The Source, 4/7/06). The House approved the measure on March 16 (see The Source, 3/17/06).

H.R. 4939 would allocate $106.474 billion in emergency spending for FY2006, $14.254 billion above the administration’s request, and $14.526 billion more than the amount approved by the House.

Amendments offered concerned the ongoing wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and hurricane recovery efforts in the Gulf Coast, but action on the bill stalled when Senators tried to use it as a vehicle to address rising gas prices.

The Senate plans to conclude its debate on H.R. 4939 early next week.
