Senate Passes Bills before Adjourning 113th Congress

On December 15, the Senate approved, by unanimous consent, several bills, including the EARLY Act Reauthorization (H.R. 5185), a bill to name a post office after former Rep. Juanita Millender-McDonald (D-CA) (H.R. 5687), the Senator Paul Simon Water for the World Act (H.R. 2901), and a resolution recognizing Nobel Laureates Kailash Satyarthi and Malala Yousafzai (S. Res. 595).

EARLY Act

The House approved the EARLY Act on December 9 (see The Source, 12/12/14). The measure, sponsored by Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), authorizes $4.9 million annually through FY2019 to educate the public and health care professionals about young women’s breast health and support research into breast cancer prevention in young women.

Juanita Millender-McDonald Post Office

The House passed H.R. 5687 on December 8 (see The Source, 12/12/14). Sponsored by Rep. Janice Hahn (D-CA), the bill names a post office facility in Long Beach, California after former Rep. Millender-McDonald, a former Co-Chair of the Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues.

Water for the World

On December 8, the House cleared the Senator Paul Simon Water for the World Act (H.R. 2901), sponsored by Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) (see The Source, 12/12/14). The legislation designates a global water coordinator at the United States Agency for International Development to oversee water, sanitation, and hygiene assistance.

Nobel Laureates

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved S. Res. 595 on December 11 (see The Source, 12/12/14). The resolution, sponsored by Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA), commends the efforts of Kailash Satyarthi and Malala Yousafzai to provide access to education for all children.
