Weekly Legislative Update: March 4, 2024

Congressional Schedule: March 4-8, 2024

Floor Action: The House and Senate are in session. 

Appropriations: This week, the House and Senate are expected to consider legislation including six spending bills: the FY2024 Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies; Energy and Water Development, and Related Agencies; Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies; Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies; Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies; and Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies spending bills.  

Reproductive Health: On Tuesday, the House is scheduled to consider H.R. 3838, the Preventing Maternal Deaths Reauthorization Act of 2023.

Women’s History: This week, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee will consider a number of bills, including S. 2274, to designate a facility of the United States Postal Service as the “Dessie A. Bebout Post Office,” and S. 3357, to designate a facility of the United States Postal Service as the “Hettie Simmons Love Post Office Building.” 

Hearing

Child Protection– On Wednesday, the House Subcommittee on Crime and Federal Government Surveillance will hold a hearing, “A Voice for the Voiceless – Child Sexual Abuse Material Identification.”

Health 

H.R. 7482–Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-OH)/Energy and Commerce (2/29/24)–A bill to reauthorize the WISEWOMAN program, which serves to extend preventive cardiovascular health services for low-income, underinsured women aged 40 to 64 years. 

H. Res. 1045–Rep. Joseph Morelle (D-NY)/Oversight and Accountability (2/29/24)–A resolution expressing support for the designation of March 3, 2024, as “National Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Day.” 

Reproductive Health 

H. Res. 1037–Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer (R-OR)/Energy and Commerce (2/29/24)–A resolution expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is necessary for women who cannot conceive naturally.  

H. Res. 1043–Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC)/Energy and Commerce (2/29/24)–A resolution expressing support for continued access to fertility care and assisted reproductive technology, such as In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), in light of the Supreme Court of Alabama’s ruling that has jeopardized access to In Vitro Fertilization and other assisted reproductive technology. 

Women’s History 

H.R. 7472–Rep. Morgan McGarvey (D-KY)/Oversight and Accountability (2/28/24)–A bill to designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 835 South 7th Street in Louisville, Kentucky, as the “Alberta Odell Jones Post Building.” 

H.R. 7508–Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-VA)/Oversight and Accountability (2/29/24)–A bill to designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 1285 Emancipation Highway in Fredericksburg, Virginia, as the “Gladys P. Todd Post Office.”  

S. 3851–Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI)/Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs (2/29/24)–A bill to designate the facility of the United States Postal Service located at 90 McCalmy Street South in Battle Creek, Michigan, as the “Sojourner Truth Post Office.”
