Women, Peace, and Security Act Clears Senate

On August 3, the Senate approved, by voice vote, S. 1141, the Women, Peace, and Security Act of 2017, sponsored by Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH). The bill would ensure that the United States promotes the “meaningful participation of women in mediation and negotiation processes seeking to prevent, mitigate, or resolve conflict.”

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved the bill on May 25 (see The Source, 6/23/17). The House approved its version of the bill (H.R. 2484), sponsored by Rep. Kristi Noem (R-SD), on June 20 (see The Source, 6/23/17).
