Work-Life Balance Bill Fails House

On June 15, the House rejected the Work-Life Balance Award Act (H.R. 4855). The 249-163 vote fell short of the 273 votes (two-thirds majority) required for passage under suspension of the rules, the expedited process under which the bill was considered. The House Education and Labor Subcommittee on Workforce Protections held a hearing on the bill in April (see The Source, 4/23/10).

Sponsored by Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-CA), H.R. 4855 would establish an annual award at the Department of Labor for employers who have developed and implemented work-life balance policies. The bill also would establish an advisory board that would develop criteria to determine the award recipients.
