On December 21, the House passed, 314-20, the Protecting Students from Sexual and Violent Predators Act (H.R. 6547).
Sponsored by Rep. George Miller (D-CA), the bill would require background checks for school employees. The measure would prohibit schools from employing individuals who refused to submit to a background check, made false statements regarding the background check, had been convicted of a sexual or violent crime against a minor or felonies, including child abuse or neglect, crimes against children, or rape or sexual assault.
The bill also would require school districts that discover that an individual is a sexual predator to report to local law enforcement agencies that the individual has applied for employment.
