Bill to Reauthorize NASA Passes House Committee

On July 21, the House Science and Technology Committee approved, by voice vote, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Authorization Act (H.R. 5781).

The measure, sponsored by Chair Bart Gordon (D-TN), would authorize $19 billion in FY2011, $19.45 billion in FY2012, $19.96 billion in FY2013, $20.6 billion in FY2014, and $20.99 billion in FY2015 for programs at NASA. Included in the amount authorized for FY2011 is $145.8 million for education programs.

The bill would require, among other provisions, that the NASA administrator carry out evidence-based programs to increase student interest and participation, including that of women and underrepresented minorities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education. Specifically, the legislation would require the director of STEM education, as part of her or his duties, to increase participation and advancement of women and minorities at every level of STEM education.

During consideration of the bill, the committee adopted, by voice vote, an amendment by Rep. Donna Edwards (D-MD) to establish a competitive selection of pilot projects that test and demonstrate new forms of hands-on education and training projects. The amendment requires that such projects focus on engaging young girls, among other groups, in STEM hands-on education and training activities.
