On March 13, the House approved, 246-181, the Preserving Work Requirements for Welfare Programs Act (H.R. 890). The House Ways and Means Committee approved the legislation on March 6 (see The Source, 3/8/13).
Sponsored by Rep. Dave Camp (R-MI), the measure would prevent the secretary of Health and Human Services from implementing a July 12, 2012 rule that would allow states to apply for waivers from the work requirements established in the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (P.L. 104-193), which established the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program (see The Source, 9/21/12 for additional information).
The bill also would extend the TANF through December 2013; the current authorization (P.L. 112-175) expires on March 27.
