Senate Extends Higher Education Act

On April 29, the Senate passed, by unanimous consent, S. 2929, a bill to extend until May 31, 2008, the Higher Education Act (HEA) (P.L. 105-244). The current extension of the HEA (P.L. 110-198) expired on April 30, 2008.

Sponsored by Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-MA), S. 2929 would extend the federally sponsored programs that govern institutions of higher education and the programs for financial assistance — including Pell Grants, Stafford and Perkins loans, and campus-based aid — for students, colleges, and universities.

The House is expected to pass the extension next week.
