On May 25, the House Judiciary Committee approved, by voice vote, H.R. 4894, a bill to require the attorney general, when requested by local or state educational agencies or private schools, to conduct fingerprint-based checks of the national crime information databases on individuals who are employed, are being considered for employment, or are volunteering at a school or agency, in a position in which the individual will work with or around children. When possible, the check would include a review of state criminal databases, and the attorney general and the states could be reimbursed for the checks. The information would be released only to authorized personnel. Rep. Jon Porter (R-NV) is the sponsor of H.R. 4894.
