Defense Subcommittee Approves FY2014 Spending Bill

On June 5, the House Appropriations Defense Subcommittee approved, by voice vote, the FY2014 Defense appropriations bill (as-yet-unnumbered).

According to the committee summary, the bill would provide $512.5 billion in FY2014 for “non-war” programs within the Department of Defense (DoD). This amount is $5.1 billion below FY2013 and $3.4 billion below President Obama’s FY2014 budget request.

The legislation would provide $129.6 billion for military personnel, which is $2.1 billion below FY2013 and below the president’s request of $137.077 billion (see FY2014 Budget Summary).

The Defense Health Program would receive $33.6 billion in FY2014. This amount is $858 million over FY2013 and $519 million over the president’s request. Funding for cancer research ($240 million) and suicide prevention and outreach programs ($20 million) also would be included.

Sexual assault prevention and response programs would be fully funded at $157 million in FY2014; an additional $25 million would be provided to expand sexual assault victim assistance programs.

Additional details will be made available when the committee releases its report.
