House Approves National Defense Authorization

On May 18, the House approved, 277-147, H.R. 4909, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), as amended. The Armed Services Committee approved the measure on April 27 (see The Source, 4/29/16). The Senate Armed Services Committee approved its version of the bill, S. 2814, on May 12 (see The Source, 5/13/16).

According to the committee report (Part 1 and Part 2), the bill would authorize $602.2 billion in discretionary funds in FY2017 for military and national security programs at the Departments of Defense and Energy and for overseas contingency operations (OCO). The bill would authorize the base Defense budget at $543.4 billion and OCO at $58.8 billion.

As amended, the bill strikes the provision adopted during committee consideration to require women ages 18 to 26 to register for Selected Service.
