House Committee Addresses TANF Work Requirements

On March 6, the House Ways and Means Committee approved, 21-14, H.R. 890, the Preserving Work Requirements for Welfare Programs Act. The Ways and Means Subcommittee on Human Resources held a hearing on February 28 to address the July 2012 rule issued by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that would grant the secretary of HHS authority to allow states to test “alternative and innovative employment outcomes for needy families” (see The Source, 3/1/12).

Chair Dave Camp and Ranking Member Sander Levin convened the mark-up; there were no amendments offered during consideration of the bill.
